Academic Writing Workshop Series with Zachary Reyna
Fall 2023! Registration now open! Email Zach Reyna (zel.reyna@gmail.com)
Tuesdays, 28 November–19 December, 11:00 EST / 16:00 GMT / 19:00 EET
Are you working on dissertation chapter, seminar paper, or article in English and would like to get direct feedback from peers and a native English-speaking academic editor and academic writing teacher? Are you struggling to structure your argument, write in English, or find your voice? Is it difficult for you to move forward with an academic text or do you find it difficult to share drafts with others? You are not alone.
Wherever you are at, if you are working on an academic text in English, then this workshop series is for you. Participants will be encouraged to submit a 500-1500 word section of a text they are working on prior to each of the four workshops. These sections of text will be workshopped during the session through discussion, peer review, and mini-lessons on structuring argument, voice, formatting, and the journal submission process. I will also provide written feedback and English-language editing for each section of text submitted. Ideally, over the course of the series you will have workshopped and received careful, honest, and open feedback from both me and the other participants on an entire chapter or article.
Since 2016, I have taught academic writing in the US (Johns Hopkins University), Russia (Tyumen State University), and the Netherlands (Leiden University). I have been an academic editor for longer, both as a freelance editor and an assistant editor of the Q1 journal Political Theory which gave me an intimate and hands-on view into the journal submission and publication process. I am also an academic. I did my PhD in Political Science (political theory) at Johns Hopkins University (2017). I have most recently recently been a Marie Curie Fellow at Leiden University (Netherlands) working on a political ethnography of utopian community experiments in the Global North. I have several academic publications in Q1 journals and a university press. I also struggle immensely with my own writing, so will be engaging in the workshop series as a participant too.
*This workshop series is primarily intended for grad students and early academics working in English as a second language. Everyone, though, is welcome, including younger students and seasoned English writers!
