Gain confidence in English-language academic spaces
Thursday 20 March 2025, 6-8pm UTC
More people speak English as an additional language (EAL) than as their first language—there are over a billion EAL speakers compared to only 300 million first language speakers. And yet how often have you entered an academic space only to feel it taken over by so-called ‘native speakers’? Do you struggle to feel comfortable in academic spaces as a result, or feel that your language skills are holding you back? Do you feel too shy to speak up at conferences or do the kind of soft-skill conversation work that is so important to building an academic network?
Join us for an interactive two-hour workshop on gaining confidence in English-language academic spaces.
Together we will explore some of the barriers you may face in using English in academic spaces and work on techniques to overcome shyness or blocks in communication. The workshop will involve active speaking and listening, but will provide a safe and encouraging space to do so—so come prepared to talk about your work!
You will gain:
- Techniques and tips for conversing in academic English
- Confidence to overcome the barriers you may face in speaking English in academic spaces
- Practice talking about your work in the moment and instructor feedback
- A community of EAL speakers to remind you you are not alone!
FUNDING OPTIONS:
We offer a limited number of scholarships to people in need. We don’t ask for specific financial information - please just email us with a few sentences about how your writing practice would benefit from the course and why financial assistance would help you in your writing journey. Contact us: info@editingcooperative.com with the subject line “four simple steps”
The pay-it-forward model will help to fund the scholarships, so the more people who pay-it-forward, the more support we can offer to those in need!
This workshop will take place on Google Meet. Participants will receive an email link to join, as well as a recording of the workshop after the session.
